“I will, Your Majesty,” and seeing that this conference was at an end, he bowed to
the king and then to Queen Rhea and withdrew.
Darius sat in silence after his departure. Then he said to Rhea: “Never have I seen
such a man! Such beauty of wisdom and nobility and humility! Has he sons and
daughters?”
“Ah no! He has never married. It is against the law of the God of the Hebrews to
marry one not of their faith. He and his friends came here as mere youths, and though
after their phenomenal rise to power, they were much sought-after for marriages to the
daughters of the Chaldean nobility, they steadfastly refused, since none of them were
of the faith of Jehovah. They imposed upon themselves to be eunuchs for the
Kingdom Of God’s sake, and have steadfastly adhered to their determination-
voluntary celibates till death.”
“From you and this man, I will yet know more of this Jehovah, my esteemed Aunt.
But for now, I bid you adieu,” was the parting remark of Darius the Mede.
